2005-09-03 - 3:18 p.m. GOD IS PUNISHING US FOR BUSH’S PRIDE By Peter Fredson September 3, 2005 I went to the local grocery store to get some hot-dog buns. While there I greeted an old lady, a Baptist neighbor. “How are you doing today,” I asked. “Not too good. I’ve been watching the TV news about the terrible hurricane on the Gulf Coast, and I’m all upset.” “Yes,” I said, in agreement with her, “All that death and destruction is terrible news, and our officials seem to be stumbling in the dark about giving prompt aid.” “Well,” she said, “I’ve been praying for answers from God. I asked him why he caused all the horror. Then a great light came over me, and I heard him tell me why all this happened.” “Oh,” I remarked, with great interest. “Yes,” she replied, “God said he was going to show the Americans what all the death and destruction that Bush caused in Iraq was like. And God said that Bush committed the sin of pride, and needed a lesson in humility. So that’s what happened.” “You may be right,” I said, “I hope he takes this lesson to heart.” Then I paid for the hot-dogs and went home, wondering it were possible for a petulant, irritable, irresponsible president to even consider the possibility that he might have been mistaken in declaring war on a far-distant land. Meanwhile, the hurricane season is only half-over. Let’s see what develops.
